I was up at the local pub having lunch today and was reading the newspapers that were laying around and came across this good article from Exclaim! by Allison Outhit. You can read the full article online by clicking here.

In the wasteland of the music business, hundreds of truckloads of CDs wind up every year in the landfill. How does this happen? For starters, the practice is to manufacture in bulk, regardless of sales viability, because it’s cheaper. If half of the units manufactured actually ship to retail, a big chunk of those — perhaps half again — may end up coming back to the warehouse anyway. ‘

Add to this pile the promotional copies, many of which don’t even exit the shrink-wrap before getting chucked in the bin by whatever totally uninterested executive or editor they’ve been sent to… Well, that’s a mountain of plastic. A recent report in the U.K. Guardian claims that one million unsold copies of Robbie Williams’ last CD Rudebox will be shipped to China to be crushed (and hopefully used for road-surfacing). Dealing with product waste like this reportedly costs EMI millions of dollars a year.

Okay I will be honest; I have never actually played Guitar Hero. The whole idea seems so absurd to me, playing a little plastic guitar that is attached to a TV. I admit it would probably be fun, and if it were around I’d probably give it a go. And for the first 10 minutes or so I’d probably be mesmerized by it.

The reason I hate Guitar Hero though is that when I subscribe to Google Alerts with the keyword Guitar - I get like 10 links to Guitar Hero Articles sent to me everyday. Things like Ex-NFL player almost dies - concerned about Guitar Hero skills, This new device is all you need to be a true Air Guitar Hero or my personal favorite The Tragic Death of the Guitar Hero.

It’s really quite ridiculous - here I am sifting through these emails to find anything of value happening on the net Guitar wise and I end up watching someone play Guitar Hero on YouTube for 10 minutes. Seriously, quit posting this stuff on YouTube, you are wasting my life.

The video that I ended up accidently watching tonight is below.

Guitar Rising was recently unveiled at the Independent Game Conference in Austin, TX. At the conference’s Game Demo Night, players - both guitar newbies and hobbyists alike - strapped on a real electric guitar and fretted and strummed their way though introductory and skilled game levels. Unlike games like Guitar Hero, where gamers use a small fake plastic guitar, this one actually requires the gamer to use a real guitar. Check out the cheesy video ad below.

After reading this blog post called Acoustic or Electric Guitar - Which Is Best For The Beginner, I decided I’d offer my own take on what beginners should consider when they are going to purchase a new instrument. Of course all guitars are different, and it is much easier to play an electric guitar then and an acoustic and it is even easier to play a nylon classical guitar then an electric. But really I don’t think you should even thing about this.

Think about this: What music do you like? What kind of music do you want to play? Who are your favorite musicains and what type of instruments do they play on?

If you want to rock out like Nirvana or Metallica or whatever then you are going to need an electric guitar with an amplifier unless you are going to be in some weird unplugged metal band or something. Electrics are designed with low action to make left had finger movement fast and efficient. A steel stringed acoustic is much more difficult to develop the same type of mobility on.

If you are going to learn classical then you have to buy a nylon stringed classical guitar - it is easier to finger pick on because it is designed with a wider neck. Same goes for flamenco.

Some guitarists will tell beginners that they should buy a particular type of guitar because it is easier to learn on. The truth is you should buy the type of guitar that is going to bring you the most enjoyment and continue to motivate you.

Same goes for instructors and teacher. It’s alot harder to keep learning if you are playing songs that you don’t even like. If you are working with an instructor or a teacher who is a total metal head and what you really want to learn is classical guitar then you need to rethink things.

Pick your guitar type based on your musical tastes and it will be easier to stick with it. Guitar is a difficult instrument no matter what type it is - so having this extra edge of motivation will more likely take you further.

So buy whatever guitar you want - just don’t forget to play it.

And if you’ve never purchased a guitar before you may want to read this.

You may have noticed that I titled this section “Other Stuff”. And it’s simply because I hate the word BLOG. Despise it. It sounds like something you cough up or some type of horror movie character. “Attack of the Blog” or what have you. But that aside, this section is somewhat although I admit it reluctantly in all actuality a blog. Anyways that brings me to the point of this post, there are plenty of Great Guitar Blogs on the internet today, and if you look at the bottom of this post; I have supplied a link to a few great ones you might want to check out. But first, I’d like to give you a little lesson in technology, as keeping track of websites can often be a problem if you know of lots you like to stay updated on.

So today had a theme for me, let’s just call today Wii monday. The day that dragged and dragged until at about 3 oclock Lindsay (my co-worker) and I decided to play the office Wii. She beat me 3 times in a row at bowling; it hurts inside. I’m still recovering.

Anyways strangely enough I was surfing around some totally unrelated to the Wii Google results tonight and came across this video on YouTube, that is also Wii related.

If you’d like to make a Witar you will need to get the script from here. You will also need a program called GlovePie which you can download here. I haven’t tried this myself because I don’t own a Wii, but perhaps tomorrow or some other time this week I will have to have a go at making a Witar at the office.

Apparently I am way behind the 8 ball on this one as I found a posting on Digg from 318 days ago.

You can also use the Witar to play Guitar Hero III on a PC. There are alot of other uses for the Wii and it even has it’s own Wiki as well.

The guitar was hand-painted by acclaimed artist Ronnel Ventor of Franklin, and featured the face of country star LeAnn Rimes.

Curb’s Becky Judd says that the fact that the guitar was secured with concrete and locked down didn’t deter the thief. “Unfortunately, whoever took it managed to cut the lock and break the guitar from the stand,” Judd says. “I only hope they didn’t damage the guitar.”

A reward is being offered for any information leading to the return of the guitar. How do you steal a 10 foot high guitar and perhaps more importantly, what do you do with it?

This is a really fun song to learn, but it could be frustrating if you are a beginner and unfamilar with the chords and finger strumming style that Smith employs. There are alot of inaccurate tabs out there in “Internet Land” so here is a link to most accurate tab out there from SweetAdeline.net which I have learned from and believe is the most accurate tab out there for Angeles.

I spent quite abit of time learning this song and trying to find the most accurate tab, but what I figured out from learning this song is that it’s not only important to have a accurate tab to learn from but you must know how to execute the strumming technique.

He uses 2 techniques, and for the intro it’s straight up Travis Picking. If you can’t Travis Pick you should probably spend a few hours, sessions or weeks depending on your skill level learning this picking style before you even try to learn Angeles. If you study enough Elliot Smith songs you will find he uses this technique quite often; as well as other advanced strumming and picking techniques like appreggio.

Keep in mind that leaning Travis Picking will open you up to a world of other songs, as it’s a very popular picking pattern; and it has many variations.

Travis Picking is basically an alternating of the low bass note with a high treble note in between. Though there are alot of different patterns this is the general principle that underlies all Travis Picking. Click here for a Travis Picking lesson.

I am not sure if there is an offical name for the second style of strumming that Elliot Smith employs, but I think it is probably an arpeggio or flamenco-inspired technique. Basically he plucks the bass notes with his thumb and strums with his fingers. The first strum down is I believe with the thumb, then the others are alternating with the tip of his index finger and other fingers. And if you watch the video closely or slow it down you can see he rakes his finger upwards across the strings in some places. It almost sounds like fast finger picking. But he’s just brushing the strings with the tips of his fingers.

The best way you can see this is to watch the video that is posted here. Forward to 3:10 - 2:57 of the video and click the pause/play button rapidly so you can see Elliot strumming kind of in slow motion and you will see what I mean.

Another interesting clip is at around 1:58 to 1:55. I find this really interesting because although his back seems to be a little hunched the angle that he holds the guitar at and the way his arms and fingers are positioned are in an extremely relaxed and natural position. The basic fact of the matter is if you play with too much tension in your body then you will never learn anything.

You don’t have to have perfect posture to play guitar, god knows I don’t but I think it’s more important to relax when you play, rather than playing with tonnes of tension in your arms and hands…

After reading this article on Yahoo about ‘Guitar Hero II’, I couldn’t help but snicker a little especially after this:

In reality, all you’re doing is pressing a combination of buttons at just the right moment. But the fact that you’re standing up, wailing away on a toy guitar adds to the immersive quality.

And I thought to myself, the only thing better would be to actually sit and play a real guitar! Made of wood!

I am not an avid video game player. On the rare occasion I have been known to sit around a friend’s house on a saturday night playing video games, but most of the time it was just because we were to hung over to do anything else…

Ever played this?

This just in, you don’t need to sign a recording contract to distribute your music any more. In fact it’s the corporations that are chargin you a “listening tax”. Bob Ostertag rages against the mass media music machine in this scathing article on Alternet. A great read if you want to understand how it all works and the potential with the net for it to change.

It kind of reminded me of an old Hunter S. Thompson quote,

“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.”

Here are a couple of quotes from the article:

“Record companies used to charge a fee for making it possible for people to listen to recorded music. Now their main function is to prohibit people from listening to music unless they pay off these corporations.”

“Or to put it slightly differently, they used to provide you with the tools you needed to hear recorded music. Now they charge you for permission to use tools you already have, that they did not provide, that in fact you paid someone else for. Really what they are doing is imposing a ‘listening tax’…”

“Really what they are doing is imposing a “listening tax.” Like all taxes, if you don’t pay you are breaking the law; you are a criminal! Armed agents of the state have shown up at private residences and taken teenagers away in handcuffs for failure to pay this corporate tax.”

Bob Ostertag is a “composer, performer, historian, instrument builder, journalist, activist, and kayak instructor ” who has published “21 CDs of music, two movies, two DVDs, and two books”. You can check out his website here.

Last night I was able to get this site updated and running. The 2 biggest features that have been added are the chord section now contians over 1800 chord diagrams. Most types of chords have 8 different inversions. The other major update I did was adding some forums, as I was getting alot of email and unfortunately don’t have time to respond to it all, I figured alot of things people were asking or writing about could easily just be posted in a forum…thereby opening up the flood gates to see if they can get a response from someone out there that has experience with the guitar type stuff other than myself, it will be interesting to see for me at least if anything interesting comes of that.

Also I moved the guitar tuner to the home page, if your looking for it.

PS, This post is mainly here because I needed something in this section, but will try to add something daily, okay probably weekly that is half interesting to other guitarists out there to this section, possibly not all guitar related, but mostly.

Happy Surfing.
