Default Alternate Tuning Chart

I get alot of email about alternate tunings that I haven't covered or added to this site. If you know of any alternate tunings that aren't on this page:

http://www.howtotuneaguitar.org/tuni...-tuning-chart/

Let me know them and I will add them in.

I don't know what the tuning's name is but it goes like this: E G# B F# B F#
Let me know what you think of it.

Hi,

Here's one by David Crosby which he used on Guinnevere. Pretty cool.

Tuning E B D G A D Low to High.

I found your alternate tunings to be very enlightening but I am curious as to why some tunings are all uppercase letters and some are mixed ( upper and lower case)??

Default More Tunings

John St Fields only ever used the tuning GBDGBD - sometimes used in US country music.

Dave Evans, last heard of running a pottery in Belgium, made three great albums, Elephantasia, The Words In Between, and The Sad Pig Dance (instrumentals). The key to a lot of his stuff is in two peculiar tunings, CGDGBbD and CGDGAD. The latter tuning is also used by Gordon Tyrrall. The former is used for The Words In Between, and The Sad Pig Dance (the tunes, not the entire albums).

I couldn't see E modal in the list - EADEAE. Martin Carthy has used this, and it is the tuning for Man In A Shed by Nick Drake. Mr Carthy also uses DADEAE for some things - mind you, his whackiest tuning is for Trimdon Grange Explosion - AAAAAE.

Semantics -
I might mention that in US blues circles open G (DGDGBD) is sometimes called Spanish tuning, and open Em (EBEGBE) or Dm is called Crossnote.
The tuning listed as "lute" was the tuning used for the Vihuela, a legendary and lost instrument.

That sounds interesting. The tuning I have always used for that, as well as Deja Vu, is

E -> D
A -> A*
D -> C
G -> F
B -> G
E -> C

* - A remains the same, all others tuned down

It isn't quite the same, but it works very well for me. I think I got that from a good friend who claimed to have gotten it directly from Crosby. I could not verify that at all, of course, but I accepted it with a grain or two of salt. It certainly sounds right to me.

Michael Hedges used a tuning denoted thusly, D2A2E3E3A3A3. I'm not sure what the numbers mean, but it sure sounds good. Go to this youtube url to hear it.

OO a tubing ... got your furds woddled?

Seriously - I can't watch the video, my connection is too slow, so I have to guess.

Michael Hedges used to play a lot of "prepared guitar". In this case, I think it means he used two capos, one a guitar capo at the second fret and another at the third fret which only held down the top four strings - a banjo capo. I would guess that the guitar was tuned as indicated before the capos were put in place.

A genius - he did some weird things with small Bulldog clips sometimes ...

Hey yeah tuning-- it was pretty late and had been a long day, lol.

There are no capos on this tuning. In one of the videos, he tunes the guitar on the spot while bantering with the audience. To view the video(s), you just wait until they fully download first (the red progress bar slowly fills from left to right). I used to do it before I had a fast connection.

The thing that threw me off is the annotation written for the fifth string tuning as 'A2'. I think it's supposed to be left 'natural' as "A", while the others are either tuned or down by intervals represented by the numbers.

Thank you for your input!
